Member survey identifies priorities for negotiations

March 11, 2010

The Bargaining Committee representing PEA members at the University of Victoria has started its preparations for upcoming bargaining as the collective agreement with the University expires June 30, 2010.

The Bargaining Committee members are:

UVic members recently participated in a bargaining priorities survey, which closed March 1. The Bargaining Committee will use the survey results to determine priorities for this round of negotiations, which are scheduled to begin April 19. The committee will provide members with an opportunity to comment on the bargaining package prior to the commencement of negotiations with the employer.

Representatives of the Chapter Executive attended a meeting of the BC University Staff Associations on February 4. This was an opportunity to discuss important issues common to professional staff working for UVIC, the University of BC, and Simon Fraser University including bargaining, professional development, and terms of employment.

Chapter members have recently voted overwhelmingly in favour of changes to the chapter’s constitution. The referendum vote concluded with a ballot count on February 12. The key change to the constitution authorizes the Chapter Executive to appoint officers or directors if an incumbent resigns with six months or less remaining in their term prior to an election. As well, a handful of housekeeping amendments were ratified.

On February 8, PEA members joined UVic CUPE locals in showing support at a rally on campus to raise awareness about potential privatization of services and government limits on free collective bargaining for ambulance paramedics.

The PEA welcome Scott McCannell as Labour Relations Officer

January 28, 2010

Scott McCannellScott comes to the PEA with a broad background in both labour relations and human resources. Scott says his passion for  labour relations started as a local union activist and elected representative with the Energy & Chemical Workers Union (now CEP) and continued while he completed his B.Comm degree. Scott has continued to expand his knowledge and experience working in labour relations capacities in forestry, IT, and government and feels strongly about contributing towards the establishment of fair and engaging workplaces. He feels the PEA is a progressive, strategic, member-focused organization, that it is an appealing choice for BC’s licensed professionals. Scott’s free time is spent with family and being active in the outdoors.

Scott takes care of the servicing duties for the University of Victoria. He is the newest addition to the Victoria office.
