The PEA is an award-winning social media labour communicator, and we are very excited for you to make the most of our tools. Here are the basics of social media and why we're using it.
Social media encourages you to participate, create, alter, and talk-back.
Traditional media like TV, radio, and newspapers don’t allow for two-way communication streams. Web 2.0 and social media encourage it. Basically, with social media, the audience is on the same level as the author.
Social media is a set of technologies and sites that permit you, the user, to alter and develop content for the web, allowing you to share your knowledge and ideas. Sites like YouTube, Blogger, Facebook, and Twitter let you share your voice with millions of other users.
In layman's terms, social media is a revolutionary form of media where the author can talk directly to their audience, and the audience can react and respond, easily share the content with others, or create an alternative to the original message.

Because you are the PEA!
We want you to be a part of our dynamic communications systems and to spread the word of the PEA to your colleagues. We need you to be involved with us, and to interact with your union.
Social media allows you to speak directly to the leaders of your union and your fellow members. You will be a vital part in planning your union and help to shape the direction of the PEA and its initiatives. By using social media, the PEA is breaking down any top-down barriers faced by traditional media (newsletters, websites etc.) in a casual, open environment.
Additionally, the PEA’s diverse membership consists of members all across the province, and many members are the only one around for a hundred miles. Social media allows us to break down these heavy geographical barriers many members face.
Our social media endeavours are setting new trends in labour communications.
The Association has been using social media for about a year, and it is gaining momentum among our membership.
The PEA blog now receives as much daily traffic as our main site, and our Facebook presence is growing everyday! Our videos are getting the attention of our members, external individuals, and even provincial media outlets.
Our Access to Justice campaign focused on web 2.0 initiatives. Within 24 hours of its creation, our Facebook group boasted over 100 members, and our YouTube videos were posted and shared on numerous sites. Our social media presence made the town hall meeting Renewing Our Commitment to Legal Aid a huge success, especially when members of the LSS Board of Directors and Senior Management staff took notice of our campaign and felt it necessary to attend the event.
In May of 2009, the Canadian Association of Labour Media acknowledged our innovative work, and recognized us in the best cyberunion category during the 2008 CALM awards ceremony in Saskatoon.
Although you may not realize it, many of you are already social media users. If you have a Facebook account, read blogs, comment on message boards, watch podcasts, subscribe to RSS feeds, or even look at pictures on flickr, you are a social media buff!
Simply integrate the PEA into any social media you already use. Our links are below. Once you connect with us, you can begin creating PEA magic by using our social media tools.
