The Association Executive awards up to ten scholarships of $1,000 each to PEA members and their families who are enrolling in a full-time post-secondary education program. Scholarships are awarded based on an essay competition adjudicated by the Scholarships Committee.
This year, applicants submitted an essay of up to 1,500 words on the following topic:
Discuss the impact of provincial government funding cuts on unionized public sector workers and the public they serve.
Scholarships were awarded based on the worthiness of the essay considering content, analysis and literary style, as judged by the Scholarships Committee.
The Association Executive also awards up to ten bursaries of $500 each to PEA members who are registered or in the process of registering in a part-time program leading to a post-secondary degree or diploma. To be eligible, applicants must require financial assistance to pursue their educational goals. Should the number of applicants exceed the number of bursaries available, bursaries will be awarded to eligible applicants by lottery. Continuing education programs do not meet the eligibility criteria for the bursary program.
The scholarship and bursary programs have been established in recognition of the value that the Association and its members place on advanced education. The topic is published on pea.org and in December's year-end edition of The Professional.
Applicants for both scholarships and bursaries must comply with the guidelines established by Association Executive policy (refer to the right column links). Members may also contact the Victoria office for a copy of the applicable policy.
The scholarship topic for the 2011 competition will be announced at the end of this year. Both scholarship and bursary applications must be received to scholarships@pea.org or bursaries@pea.org by March 15, 2011.
The names of successful applicants will be published in The Professional and on the the PEA website.
